Whelping box -Why do I need one? There are many reasons why a whelping box is so important, but above all it is a place that your expectant mum/dog can have as a place for her and her pups to enjoy. The whelping box aids in keeping the litter together safe and under control once they start to find their feet. A whelping box also known as a nesting box or whelping pen protect puppies during the birthing process (whelping) and the early stages of life by keeping them safely contained, protected from the cold, and safe from the danger of crushing or smothering by the mother. A Whelping box can vary from a disposable cardboard box to reusable purpose built plastic whelping box, typically wooden whelping boxes are a thing of the past. Desired features generally include the ease of cleaning and sanitation. Whelping boxes such as our plastic versions often are used with a heat source such as a pet heat pad. The bottom of the whelping box may be lined with whelping pads, or layers of newspaper and generally some sort of fabric pet fleece to provide insulation from cold floors and to absorb fluids. Most whelp boxes will include a low railing known as rails, pig rails, or roll-bars these are fixed inside perimeter of the whelping box. These protect the puppies from being crushed by the mother should she decide to roll over during birthing or while asleep. This is important with larger dog breeds.
Along the way we have continued to develop our product range and you can now purchase up to 7 different styles and types of pet heat mats and pads ideal for new puppies to large kennel outfits. We have also developed a range of 5 different size disposable whelping box's from 24" square right up to 48" square, the boxes are made from corrugated card board and come with a waxed base. The Plastic reusable birthing boxes are 1 piece for easy and to avoid the problems commonly associated with whelping boxes that required fixing together. We have also put together a fully comprehensive kit containing everything your likely to require for your bitches delivery. Your also find on our site a wide variety of bitch supplements and some lovely pet soft heated beds.
A pet heat pad is used to keep puppies warm for the first two to three weeks of their life as they are unable to control their own body temperature and become vulnerable to hyperthermia which is the biggest known puppy killer. The heat pad would be placed inside the whelping box making sure that is does not cover more than half the size on the base of the box, the puppies have to have the option to get on and off the pad. Heat pads are also used as a helping relief for older cats and dogs that may be suffering from arthritis and stiffness of joints. The pet heat pad soothers the joints by keeping them warm and allowing the body temperature to keep at its peak. Our pads come in many sizes so they will suit all breeds and sizes. When the cold, damp, winter months arrive one of our heat pads can be an absolute god send for your pet as they begin to feel the cold much more easily. Petnap over time have also developed a range a full range of 3 metal style heat pads that are known as the flexiguard range they have been on sale successfully for over 40 years in the UK and Europe with Vets, catteries and Kennels taking advantage of the flexiguards features of being a chew proof heat pad. As catteries and kennels have to provide a source of heat for pets in their care these pads are brilliant as they allow the heat to be directed straight at the pet as appose to heating up the entire pen, meaning that the flexiguard is very cost effective.
